Dr. Sara Portwood was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sara’s family is a close knit group that loves a good crawfish boil, listening to music, laughing and telling lots of stories. Her dad taught her how play fast-pitch softball, her mom shared her love of the arts, and, as fortune would have it, when Sara turned seven, she became a big sister to her brother, Dell.
The long days spent playing catch with her dad, inspired Sara to join a fast-pitch travel softball team. Sara and her family drove to most of her tournaments, which gave Sara a deep appreciation for the beauty of Georgia and the Carolinas. During her time in high school, Sara was an All-State softball player, an All-District Volleyball player, and Female Athlete of the Year in her senior year. Sara graduated with Honors from Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge.
Through her athleticism on the softball field and her performance in the classroom Sara was accepted to Emory University. The summer after her freshman year, Sara decided to become a camp counselor in Asheville, North Carolina. She worked with campers during the twelve weeks of camp, where they went on many adventures from hiking to sailing to overnight camping trips. It was during the time that she unknowingly met her husband, Thomas. They have grown their friendship and relationship together ever since.
While at Emory, she joined Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, where she learned the importance of leadership, ethics, and philanthropy. Her chapter recognized her contribution to their organization and members and elected Sara to serve as the President. As President, she grew the chapter to its largest size, empowered her chapter to achieve the highest average chapter GPA of all sororities on campus, and helped the chapter win several national awards. Serving as chapter President taught her how to lead through her actions and to serve others with empathy and respect.
Sara adored her time in Atlanta where she enjoyed attending concerts, exploring museums, and made lifelong friendships. It was during a holiday visit home with her family in her junior year of college that she found her passion for dentistry while shadowing a Pediatric Dentist. She loved the combination of art and science, as well as the compassionate way care was delivered to patients. From that moment on, she dedicated herself to the pursuit of dentistry.
Sara graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University. After Emory, she enrolled into a Certificate for Biomedical Sciences Program in the College of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina, while she applied to dental school and continued shadowing dentists in the Charleston area. Sara’s dream of becoming a dentist was realized when she was accepted into the Medical University of South Carolina’s College of Dental Medicine. She loved living in Charleston and savored the vibrant arts scene, coastal waterways as well as the walkability of the city.
Sara is excited to join the Family Dental Health team and move to Greenville. She is an avid cyclist, yogi, and huge sports fan. When she isn’t in the office you can find her outside on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, enjoying the beauty of Falls Park, or spending time with her husband, Thomas, and their puppy Marlow.
